Highway 58 follows Whitetop Laurel for about 4 miles up to the confluence with Straight Branch where there is parking, rest rooms and picnic areas. At our first stop, I promptly lost one of those substantially larger size browns that Owens referred to. As waters cool in fall, trout everywhere begin feeding heavily, and those in Whitetop Laurel are no exception. These large mayflies are very important to imitate. Anglers can fish for both stocked and wild stream-bred trout on this stream. But as pristine as the setting is, the Virginia Creeper Trail runs along much of the stream, making it one of the most accessible wild trout fisheries in the state. 03/13/22 The stream has been fishing good but the fast moving cold front will slow things down until about Tuesday. The trails in this area are relatively open and flanked by numerous wildflowers including bee-balm.
